I had a rare night off from work last night, and Joe is performing as Mr. Sourberry in a local production of Oliver, so I had a quiet night to myself. Just me and Ellie (short for Elpheba, of course). So what did I choose to do? I sat down on the couch with my laptop, and had my own personal independent film festival, courtesy of broadwayspace.com.

So far there are 270 videos uploaded at broadwayspace.com ranging from teenage girls creating music videos to Rent’s “One Song,” to tidbits from past Tony performances that you might have missed, or might have wished you missed, to clips of Xanadu on the View, and an excellent clip of Kerry Ellis singing “The Wizard and I” on what seems to be the British version of The View. I’ve heard the song a gazillion times, but never as freshly interpreted as hers.

I’ll probably be publishing a few of these gems here and there. Today I share with you Patina Miller, singing Michael Kooman and Christopher Dimond’s  ”Random Black Girl” at what seems to be some kind of showcase at Carnegie Mellon. Her star has continued to rise since school as she has found steady work on All My Children, as well as association with a musical version of Sister Act.

I was surprised to find out at the end of the vid that this was a college student performance. She’s obviously got the goods to break out of the “Random Black Girl” role and it seems that she’s well on her way.

Enjoy!
