A few days before the Tony nominations came out, the producers over at Xanadu began a campaign in an attempt to leverage the viral power of Youtube to bring some attention to and dispel some myths about their little rock-and-roller-skate skit. It seems to be working, as Xanadu has garnered four Tony nods, including Best Musical, and their fictional Tony Campaign manager, Cubby Bernstein is showing up everywhere from the New York Times, to Playbill.com to the blogosphere.
Here are the first two episodes, introducing Cubby, who is THE Tony Campaign Manager in New York, and whose legendary temper is fabled to have given Camelot’s director a “Moss Hart-attack” during the show’s creation. The first video features cameos from Tony winners Duncan Sheik, Beth Leavel, Carole Shelley, Julie White, Martin Richards and John Cullum, and a hilarious script, rumored to be the work of Douglas Carter Beane (”Don’t be so slow!! Who wrote you? Philip Glass?!?”)
Episode two confirms the source of the campaign-within-a-campaign, as the producers of Xanadu (”Producers?!? I have unreturned phone calls older than you!”) show up at Cubby’s office and grovel in submission to feed their own ambition.
