I’m going to do my best to get to New York around Thanksgiving and see some shows. It’s making me nuts to blog about them every day and not get to partake.
On my list to see is Frankenstein the Musical, now playing at 37 Arts. I’ve been intrigued by this piece from the very first glimpse I got of it. I love the earnestness with which the creators have tried to emulate Mary Shelley’s original novel, and I like the non-linear, fluid form of storytelling they have employed.
Bought the concept CD. Wasn’t crazy about it. But I’m still rooting for this little guy in the shadow of the big guy.
I ran across this video of an press-invited rehearsal recently. I can’t say it placates any of my doubts, but there are some encouraging spots too. I guess I won’t know until I’m there, immersed in the world of its creators.
As usual, my thoughts follow the vid. Enjoy

® Granted, it’s a rehearsal, but there seems to be an awful lot of singing between the cracks, especially by the good doctor.
® The Madonna mics make me nuts.
® I realize it can be difficult to speak coherently when there’s a camera rolling, but sometimes it’s difficult to listen to too.
® The young actor playing William Frankenstein (Struan Erlenborn) is wearing a Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat t-shirt.
® The scene between The Creature and Victor Frankenstein is kind of hot.
® I like the choice to use no make up for The Creature.
® The on-camera chatter gets more coherent as the clip goes on, especially by director, Bill Fennelly.
® Casey Erin Clark as Agatha (holding the baby) has a killer voice.
® As I hoped, Hunter Foster has discovered that the Frankenstein movies are very different from the novel, since he was originally cast. That’s good.
