Stewart MacbethSet to play Claudius alongside David Tennat’s Hamlet next year, Patrick Stewart seems to have a lock on Shakespearean tragedy at the moment.

After its sell-out success at Chichester’s Minerva, the Ruper Goold-helmed Macbeth, with Stewart in the title role, opened last night at the West End’s Gielguld theatre. What say the critics?

® Michael Billington of The Guardian gives it five stars, saying its “directorial inventiveness is… matched by brilliant acting.”

® Nicholas de Jongh of the Evening Standard calls it “The Macbeth of a Lifetime,” saying, “It manages…freshly to convey the elemental sense of surprise, shock and supernatural horror that must have attended the tragedy’s early 17th century performances and has long since been lost.”

® Charles Spenser’s headline in the Telegraph simply states “The Best Macbeth I Have Seen” and his review provided me my vocabulary word for the day: “There is barely a longueur [a long and boring passage in a literary work] in Goold’s three-hour production, which is almost indecently packed with inspired ideas.”

Sounds pretty rousing, eh? And from the Daily Mail, we learn that this Macbeth will head to the Brooklyn Academy of Music in February for a short run. As we have learned from the sold-out McKellan Lear, better start working on those tickets now.

patrick stewart rules! i´ve been following his acting for 25years now. i watched his roles on television, on the big screen and i´ve been lucky enough to watch him on stage where he´s always said his heart and soul belongs. he is dedicated, ambitious and always convincing! he truly is an actor´s actor, an artist, too few walk this earth. only one or two a century get born with this talent and rise it to this extend and fill it with dignity and awe! god holds an eye on this gifted human being! ralph thornbird
