Rent has joined in on the reality casting craze (sort of). The producers of Rent are sponsoring a contest in which would be Bohemians can submit a minute-long video via YouTube singing a song from Rent. The entry deadline was September 15, and now the voting commences. Anyone can go to the Rent website and vote once for a performer.

The top three vote-getters will receive a trip to NYC and an audition for Rent with Bernard Tesler Casting. Given the whole Grease popularity-contest casting nightmare, I’m very firmly entrenched in the anti-reality casting camp, but since the ultimate decision is made by the actual casting director, I’m all for giving these kids a chance to skip to the head of the line, and see how it goes from there.

I’ve only seen the top ten vote-getting videos so far, and some of them have some talent for sure. And some, not so much…but check it out for yourself, cast your vote, and then go ahead and delete those old episodes of You’re The One That I Want from your DVR. It’s time. You’re not going to go back and watch them.
