Since Lance Bass is ringing bells on Wall Street, and since Justin Timberlake is sexing it up on HBO, and since Joey Fatone isn’t replacing anyone on Broadway right now, how about a little theatrical boy band video treat…

Altar Boyz is an Off-Broadway musical comedy about a fictitious Christian boy band from Ohio. The evening is presented as though the audience is at an Altar Boyz concert, and includes lyrics such as “We’re Gonna Get the Hell Out of You” and “Jesus Called Me on My Cell Phone.” It’s currently playing at New World Stages, Stage 4 (340 West 50th St between 8th and 9th Avenues).

I have to admit it was a little tired when I saw it in August of last year, but I have heard that the original cast was terrific, as is evidenced by this video (original cast recording available in the Theatre Geek Mall, to your left). The music is great, and the lyrics can be pretty funny:

There’s something about you, baby
Girl, you make me want to wait
At least until our wedding date
So till then, I’ll master–
(it doesn’t end like you think…)

   This is truly an amazing show and if it is ever in your area I highly suggest you grab your friends and family and go see the Boyz!

   Thanks for the tip, bobkrakehl. I looked for the Altar Boyz touring schedule when I published the post, but the tour seems to have run its course. I know that some regional theatres now have it on their schedules, so maybe we’ll get lucky that way…

   I have seen it 53 times in New York since June 4, 2006. If there is a 90 minute show anywhere with better music, dancing and comedy and no vulgarity, I would be surprised.
