Let me start by saying that the following quotes from the usually very articulate Claire Danes don’t really have a reference point in this article from This is Nottingham nor can I vouch for the validity of this particular source of journalism, but I was kind of shocked at this insight into what might be Ms. Danes approach to her upcoming role of Eliza Doolittle in Pygmalion.
Says she: “It’s so grooving, theatre - it’s really so demanding, I’m kind of intimidated by it, I have to admit.”
“I’m really curious about the experience, and I think I would really be fulfilled by the rehearsal period. That seems like a luxury, because you basically have a couple of days to drink lots of coffee.”
“I can be pretty analytical and nerdy about that stuff, so I like meticulously mining all the layers of the text. I don’t think it’s essential in creating a good performance, it’s just kind of a fun indulgence for me.”
So, where was her publicist on this? I’m all for raw talent and, although I wasn’t crazy about her “star” performance in Stardust, there’s no denying she’s got it, but I do hope that she fills her rehearsal time with a little more than rampant caffeine intake. And perhaps her Professor Higgins, Jefferson Mays, will be able to teach her that mining all the layers of text in a classic Shaw play should probably rate as more than a fun indulgence!! Time will tell…

I wonder if her publicist even cares what she says in these theatre related interviews. I mean, I’m sure these comments don’t sound as horrifying to the general public as they do to me. My question is, where is Roundabout’s publicist?? Somebody has to put a muzzle on this girl fast.
“I hadn’t ever read any George Bernard Shaw. It was all very new to me,” -Danes

Rocco, thanks for the extra quote. I suppose you’re right–Britney’s MTV foibles trump Claire’s Shaw missteps any day in the general public’s eye, but we theatre geeks still get riled up on occassion.
