Scanning through Full Force Theater Musings this morning, I ran across a link to Frankenstein the Musical opening at 37 Arts on October 10. Listening to the medley of music provided on their website, I gotta say it sounds pretty terrific to me! Dark, thoughtful, stirring…As excited as I am to see how Young Frankenstein turns out, the whole zillion dollar ticket hullabaloo has kind of left a bad taste in my mouth. According to Playbill, the show was originally going to be mounted at Papermill Playhouse, but has changed venues due to Papermill’s financial woes.
The stage version of the 19th-century novel is penned by Mark Baron (music) and Jeffrey Jackson (book and lyrics). Bill Fennelly directs. Gerald Goehring and Douglas C. Evans produce, in association with Michael F. Mitri and David S. Stone.
From the official Frankenstein the Musical website:
In this stage adaptation of “Frankenstein,” authors Jeffrey Jackson and Mark Baron sought to create a work that was extraordinarily faithful to Mary Shelley’s original novel while offering a bold, new experience for modern theater audiences. To do so, they have broken with many of the conventions of musical theater to re-imagine the classic allegory as a “memory play” in which time and space are fluid, and in which people and places come instantly alive in the mind of the story’s protagonist, Victor Frankenstein–and vanish just as quickly. The result is a thrilling “mindscape” that brings the timeless myth of Frankenstein to life as never before.
Reading that description and listening to the snippets of music provided on the website, it sounds like this show is going to be the antithesis of Young Frankenstein, and will provide a more serious (perhaps more engaging) theatrical experience.
Performances will play Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 8 PM; Wednesday and Sunday at 3 PM; and Saturdays at 2 PM. Tickets go on sale Aug. 6 and $20 student rush tickets are available at all performances 20 minutes prior to curtain with valid student ID.
